Antique Sword Damaged in Transit
Some time ago I was contacted out of the blue by someone needing to repair an antique WW2 Officers ShinGunto that was damaged in transit to them. Not a great way to receive an anticipated piece of your collection.
I had never done a restoration project before, but the client had been referred to me because of my reputation for Tsukamaki and decided to take a chance on me because I use authentic materials and techniques.
It was more than a little daunting, however I knew enough people I could call upon to help with the wood tsuka core re-build, and I felt confident in applying new Samegawa and silk tsukaito.
I learned a lot doing this project and I’m grateful to the client for taking a chance on me. This project helped cement my total love of the Japanese sword and all its intricate details. This work truly got me addicted to the possibility of making my own oneday.
*Client opted for Panels over a full skin core wrap as the piece was for display only.
