About The
Maker
I have been a professional knife maker and bladesmith for close to a decade. Having started my career in the world of Defensive EDC knives, in 2025 I made the decision to follow a new path. For most of my life I had dreamed of making Japanese swords and the time was right to begin this journey of study and refinement in this fine art.
During my tenure as a knifemaker and designer at Ironside Edge Works I had already developed a unique style among my contemporaries. While I wasn’t the first to do Japanese wrapped handles on modern knives, I feel that I was a pioneer in taking this style back to its roots. Using authentic Tsukamaki methods and materials to achieve a true hybrid between modern EDC knives and traditional Japanese swords. This can be seen still in a few knives I still make like The Shrike.
My focus however is firmly on my future. I no longer see myself as a maker of EDC knives, and rather an artist in pursuit of creating unique, sole authorship Japanese swords. It must be clearly stated that I am not a maker of Nihonto, and I have never undergone traditional apprenticeship for any aspect of the Japanese blade making craft. However I have a deep respect and reverence for the tradition. I have spent years researching and practicing techniques, and I aim to follow the authentic methodology as closely as I can, with high quality materials and traditional tools.
My work is therefore limited simply by the fact I am one man who only has two hands and so many hours in a day.
I have to be discerning in my approach so as not to waste precious time. While I will still make knives from time to time I see these as necessary distractions away from the intense processes of bringing a sword to life. My focus and intention is firmly on the Japanese sword.
My aim is to make between 5 and 8 traditional Japanese works each year. While this sounds like very little, it is a daunting amount of work for one maker, especially with the level of detail and refinement I want from my work. My aim is to make pieces that are always of an exceptional quality and fit for purpose.
My intention is for these works to be functional and useable for the martial arts practitioner, but also highly detailed for the collector and connoisseur.
Each piece I make is unique and I don’t repeat previous work. I build these works according to the specific requirements of the client, along with aesthetic themes which will be discussed before I begin work. I prefer not to work to rigid or fixed aesthetic requirements, where every aspect has been decided for me. I require creative freedom within the scope of the project and this is non negotiable. I want collaboration, not dictation.
For the most part my work is commissioned directly by patrons, although I will make pieces that end up on the open market through reputable dealers from time to time. If you are interested in commissioning work from me, please see my Commissions page for full details of this process.
